How LeadUP! Began
In the summer of 2011, LeadUp! co-founder Bob Graham organized a "Spare Change to Change a Life" pilot project for teens and their families in the Bleeding Disorders Advocacy Network of New York. Nine families collected all the spare change they could in two weeks before a weekend retreat. They collected $137, which was matched by an anonymous local donor to sponsor Monu Kumar from Delhi, India.
This is exactly the kind of activity and commitment Bob wishes for LeadUP! In fact, one special young lady, Crystal Vargas, stood out in this project. Crystal collected $47 in change from her family and friends over ten days. Besides having a bleeding disorder, Crystal deals with neurofibromatosis, a brain tumor that has left her blind in one eye and learning/speech impaired, and scoliosis. Bob was particularly impressed with Crystal because he feels her example shows that the only real barrier to making a difference is the willingness to try. |

Leading Team Kilimanjaro
![]() |
When Laurie Kelley and BioRx co-founder Eric Hill planned an expedition up Mt. Kilimanjaro to raise funds for Save One Life in August 2011, Laurie's 17-year-old daughter Mary and Eric's 15-year-old son Alexander were game to go. The team had set a goal for each climber to raise $3,000; Mary immediately began her fundraising for the climb, bringing in the first donations by any climber as early as March, and raised nearly $4,000. Andrew, with the help of some very generous friends, raised more than $7,000. The sweetest part? Both achieved the 17,000 foot summit!! |

Matthew's Mission
Save One Life considers Matthew Horbacz to be the first "official" LeadUP! volunteer. Starting with their first beneficiary, Raj, in 2006, Matthew and his family now sponsor 30 beneficiaries. When Matthew, who has severe hemophilia A, expressed an interest early in 2012 to visit some of the family's beneficiaries in Mumbai, India, this quickly grew into a much bigger project. Matthew set a goal to get 20 more beneficiaries sponsored by the time he would be leaving for his trip in April 2012. After presentations and appeals to family, friends, members of his church and sports teams, Matthew succeeded in raising sponsorships for 45 beneficiaries and over $1800 for the Save One Life Fund, which supports beneficiaries who've lost their sponsorships. His trip to Mumbai was unforgettable! See wonderful photos and read his stories. |
