Spring Celebration 2013

Spring Celebration Gala

Save One Life celebrated its third annual spring event with 105 guests at The Exchange Conference Center, an elegant historic venue on the Boston harbor. Guests represented the hemophilia community in full range--from pharmaceutical companies to specialty pharmacies, from patients to families.

Laurie Giving Welcome Speech
Laurie Kelley opening the awards ceremony

Laurie Kelley opened the evening with a story about unexpectedly finding a shoe under her bedroom bureau while getting ready for the event. This became a metaphor, as Laurie reflected that sometimes we have to go into the dark places, the not-so-glamorous places, even the dirty places where we'd rather not go to find the things we are missing or have lost. She added, "In our affluent society (and most of us are affluent compared to those we serve), we slowly and subtly can lose our compassion, tolerance, mission, and unconditional giving." She drew everyone's attention to the slide presentation that ran throughout the evening, showing faces of Save One Life beneficiaries, their families and their homes in some of those unglamorous places--megaslums, towns, rural villages--where suffering prevails, and Save One Life is dedicated to offering compassion and help.

After acknowledging our event sponsors, executive director Martha Hopewell presented banners to our premier 2013 core services sponsors: Platinum sponsor FFF Enterprises and Gold sponsors ASD Healthcare, LA Kelley Communications and Octapharma. The leaders of these corporate sponsors are also our largest beneficiary sponsors, with Patrick Schmidt sponsoring 88 children, Neil Herson sponsoring 50, Laurie Kelley sponsoring 10 and Wolfgang Marguerre sponsoring 70 respectively.

 BDI Pharma
Richard Gaton accepts the Sponsor of the Year award for BDI Pharma

Each year Save One Life acknowledges sponsors who have supported beneficiaries consistently for five years with a certificate and Save One Life lapel pin. Twenty five sponsors earned this recognition in 2013, with two present--Neil Herson and Sudha Chandrasekharan--to personally receive their awards. Our 2013 Sponsor of the Year, Richard J. Gaton, traveled to Boston with Brad Davis to receive an award on behalf of BDI Pharma, which sponsors 20 beneficiaries.

Usha Program Partner

Next we showed a brief video to give guests a flavor of our work in the field. Featuring our India Program Coordinator Usha Parthasarathy and Mr. Raghunandanan, our key contact from Kunnamkulam Chapter in Kerala, viewers had the opportunity to see the faces of beneficiaries and visit the home of Shinaz, a boy sponsored by Save One Life board member Jessica Swann. We were delighted to have Usha and her husband present to receive the 2013 Program Partner of the Year award for Kunnamkulam Chapter. We also surprised Usha with a special gift and sincere thanks for her many volunteer hours to guide and support 20 chapters and over 500 India beneficiaries.

Later in the evening Laurie presented an award to cyclist Barry Haarde, fresh off his 3,456-mile cross-country Wheels for the World 2013: Fast and Furious tour that very afternoon.
