HEMOPHILIA IN TANZANIA

Tanzania is a country in East Africa with a population of about 41 million. This means there could be from 2,000-4,000 with hemophilia. The life expectancy is only about 50. Treatment consists only of FFP, when available. There is no cryo. The first infusion of factor concentrate occurred only in 2005, with a donation from Project SHARE. The government does not purchase factor concentrate. The Muhimbili National Hospital in Dar es Salaam is the main public hospital where treatment is offered.

Tanzania is composed of 26 administrative regions, with more than 80% of the population rural, and 36% living below the poverty line. Tanzania is in the bottom ten percent of the world’s economies in per capita income.
