My Story

Jennifer is 15 years old, and she is currently enrolled in high school. She is a strong student and her favorite subject is English. She would love to be a pilot when she is older. On days that she cannot walk to school, she stays home because her family cannot afford to hire a ride. When not at school, she helps with chores around the house.

She lives with her mother, 2 older brothers, and 2 older sisters. Her father does not live with the family nor does he support them financially. Her mother sells pancakes and her brother works as a painter. Together they earn less than $50 a month. Her family rents a two-room mud home in the village of Kasese. The home does not have electricity or running water. Her family has to purchase water and meals are cooked outside over a wood fire.

Jennifer has been diagnosed with von Willebrand disease as well as HIV. She was recently hospitalized for 2 weeks due to a nose bleed. The nearest hospital is 371km from their home and takes them 6 hours to get to by public transportation. This great distance makes accessing health care very difficult and poses a great risk in the event of a medical emergency.
